A few years ago, while I was in the throes of raising toddlers, I was walking my dog around the neighbourhood thinking about ideas for new books when a spark jumped into my head. (As an aside, if you’ve heard it said that repetitive, physical, non-verbal action stirs creativity, I totally agree!) I thought to myself, “Boy, parents really do wear a lot of hats.” For example, we’re curators of modern art (or, at least, finger paintings on the fridge), architects designing built form (or pillow forts, anyway), and receptionists scheduling important meetings (or playdates). And that’s just the beginning of what parents do! From this germ of an idea grew Great Job, Mom! and Great Job, Dad! — companion picture books that were published with Tundra Books | Penguin Random House in March 2019!
Great Job, Mom! and Great Job, Dad! are ironic jobs primers, love letters to my wife and children, and an almost documentary-style glimpse at parenting today. But most of all, they’re a lot of fun!
As with my other books — Cozy Classics and Star Wars Epic Yarns — the illustrations are produced through a combination of needle felting, scale-model set and prop making, and photography. The result is artwork that I hope you’ll find distinctive, warm, and refreshing.
Come back and visit my site every now and then to see what I’m up to in the world of kidlit. In the meantime, let’s raise a glass to all the hard-working mom’s and dad’s out there! You’re doing a GREAT JOB!
